For many Australians experiencing hair loss, the financial burden of hair transplant surgery is the primary barrier to treatment, not the decision itself. If you have been considering hair restoration but are unsure how to fund it, you may be eligible for early access to your superannuation through the Australian Taxation Office’s Compassionate Release of Super (CRS) program.
At FUE Clinics Perth, we support eligible clients through the entire process from your very first consultation. Our team can assess your eligibility, explain your options, and connect you with the right support to navigate the application process, so you can focus on getting the treatment done, not the paperwork.
What Is the Compassionate Release of Super?
The Compassionate Release of Super (CRS) is an ATO-administered program that allows eligible Australians early access to a portion of their superannuation to meet certain medical expenses. It is a legal, regulated process managed entirely by the Australian Taxation Office. It is not a loan, and not a workaround.
Hair transplant treatment may be eligible for funding under this program where the procedure is the recommended treatment necessary to alleviate an acute or chronic medical condition, including mental health conditions such as clinically diagnosed depression or anxiety linked to hair loss. For many clients, hair loss causing psychological distress, reduced quality of life, or social withdrawal is a key factor in meeting compassionate release conditions. Eligibility is assessed on a case-by-case basis by the ATO and approval is not guaranteed.
For more information on the program, visit the Australian Taxation Office’s Compassionate Release of Super information page.
Key Eligibility Information
Before applying, there are several important eligibility criteria to be aware of. Meeting these conditions does not guarantee approval, as all applications are assessed individually by the ATO.
To be considered, you will generally need to:
- Hold an active Australian superannuation fund
- Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident
- Be unable to meet the cost of treatment without accessing your superannuation
Important to note:
- Eligibility is not guaranteed, even where a superannuation fund exists
- Applications are assessed individually by the ATO, taking into account your personal medical and psychological circumstances
- If your superannuation balance does not cover the full cost of treatment, you may be approved to withdraw only what is available in your fund, with the remaining cost payable upfront. We are happy to discuss this at your consultation
- In some cases, clients may also be eligible to access funds for associated medical expenses such as travel or accommodation, subject to individual ATO assessment and fund approval
We encourage all applicants to seek independent financial advice before making any decisions about early super access.
How the Process Works
At FUE Clinics, we guide eligible clients through each stage of the process. Here is what you can expect:
STEP 1: Free Eligibility Check and Consultation
The process begins with a confidential consultation with member of our Team and Doctor. During this appointment, we assess your hair loss, discuss your treatment plan and restoration goals, and determine whether you are a suitable candidate for hair transplant surgery.
Following your consultation, our specialist third-party superannuation management agency will carry out a free eligibility check and outline what supporting documentation you will need to provide evidence of your circumstances.
STEP 2: Secure Your Procedure Date
If you wish to proceed, our booking team will schedule your procedure date to allow time for the application process. A deposit is required to secure your booking. This deposit forms part of your total treatment cost and may be reimbursed through your superannuation once funds are released.
Your booking details and personalised treatment quote will be shared via a dedicated online portal accessible by you, our clinic, and the superannuation management agency throughout the process.
Your procedure must be booked before the application can be submitted, as the treatment quote and confirmed booking are required components of the ATO application.
STEP 3: Application Support
Once your procedure is booked, we hand your application over to our specialist third-party superannuation management agency. They will contact you directly, conduct the eligibility assessment, and guide you through the entire application process via the shared online portal where you can track progress and communicate with all parties involved.
Once eligibility is confirmed, a management fee is payable directly to the superannuation management agency for their services in preparing and managing your application. This fee is separate from your treatment cost and will be outlined to you before you proceed.
This stage also includes assistance with the required supporting documentation and, where needed, facilitated access to GP and psychiatric assessments. Our provider’s existing relationships with medical practitioners and psychiatrists ensure immediate appointments are available, significantly reducing wait times compared to seeking medical appointments independently.
STEP 4: ATO Review
Your completed application is submitted to the Australian Taxation Office for assessment. The ATO reviews all supporting documentation and makes an eligibility determination based on whether you meet compassionate release conditions.
Delays can occur if documentation is incomplete or if the ATO is experiencing high volumes, so we strongly encourage you to respond to any requests for information as quickly as possible to keep your application on track.
STEP 5: Fund Release and Treatment
Once the ATO approves your application, you will receive a declaration of release. Our clinic will also be in touch at this stage to confirm we have been informed of your approval and to help coordinate your next steps.
You will need to provide the declaration of release to your superannuation fund, which will then transfer the approved amount directly to you. Once funds have been received, you provide payment to FUE Clinics to confirm your scheduled hair transplant procedure at our Perth clinic. It is important to action this step promptly to ensure your procedure date is not affected.
What Costs May Be Covered?
If approved, the funds released through the CRS program may be used to cover the direct cost of your hair transplant procedure, including your initial deposit. In some cases, clients have also been approved to access funds for associated costs, including accommodation for those travelling from regional WA or interstate, however this is subject to individual ATO assessment and is not guaranteed.
Any amount approved will be drawn from your existing superannuation balance. If the approved amount does not cover the full cost of treatment, the remaining balance would need to be funded privately. We are happy to discuss payment options for any shortfall at the time of your consultation.
Superannuation withdrawn under the CRS program is subject to the same taxation that would apply upon standard withdrawal at retirement age. We recommend consulting a registered financial adviser or accountant for personalised guidance on how this may apply to your circumstances.
Please note that the management fee charged by our third-party superannuation management agency for handling your application is a separate cost and is payable directly to them. This will be discussed with you during the eligibility process so there are no surprises.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use superannuation to fund my hair transplant?
Yes, many Australians have successfully used their superannuation to fund hair transplant treatment through the ATO’s Compassionate Release of Super (CRS) program. If hair loss is significantly affecting your mental wellbeing or quality of life, you may be eligible to access your super to cover the cost of treatment. Our team can help you understand the process and assess your eligibility during a free consultation.
Does hair loss qualify as a medical condition for the CRS program?
Hair loss in itself is not automatically a qualifying condition. However, where hair loss is contributing to a clinically diagnosed condition (such as depression or anxiety) and hair transplant surgery is considered the recommended treatment, an application may be eligible. Supporting documentation from registered medical practitioners, including a psychiatrist and GP, is required to provide evidence of your circumstances.
How long does the application process take?
The timeline varies depending on individual circumstances, including how quickly supporting documentation can be obtained and how long the ATO takes to assess the application. Our provider’s relationships with medical practitioners mean we can arrange immediate appointments, which helps to move the process along quickly. In our experience, from initial application to fund release typically takes several weeks. We recommend beginning the process well in advance of your intended procedure date and providing requested documentation promptly.
How much superannuation can I access?
The amount approved by the ATO is based on the cost of your treatment and your individual circumstances. You may be approved for the full treatment cost, or only a portion of it. Any shortfall would need to be covered privately.
Will accessing my super affect my retirement savings?
Yes. While the portion of funds accessed will be drawn from your superannuation balance, the majority of our clients are still actively working and contributing to their super through their employer, meaning your balance continues to grow over time. We always recommend seeking independent financial advice to understand how early access may apply to your personal situation.
